10 Sci-Fi Movies That Deserve A Sequel

6. Dark City

New Line Cinema

Alex Proyas may be known these days for the lacklustre Knowing and the atrocious Gods of Egypt, but back in the late nineties he created an overlooked gem. Dark City is a visionary work of art that dives deep into the psychological side of the genre.

The narrative at its centre is an enigma, with Rufus Sewell's John Murdoch waking up in a sinister situation with no knowledge of how he got there. As the world bends and contorts around him, the deeper elements of the film emerge.

From its hazy opening to the light at the end of the tunnel, Dark City oozes with atmosphere. It succeeds thoroughly at absorbing the audience into its world and ideas, with the great cast also rising to the occasion. Sadly the film was unable to succeed at the box, just barely reaching above its 27 million dollar budget.

Could a sequel explore the film's themes of identity further? It's certainly possible. How does the strange setting function within the mind? Who are the Strangers and what are they after? It would be great to receive further closure.
