A public identity can be a double-edged sword for a superhero.

On one hand, you don’t have to worry about keeping any secrets from your friends and family, not to mention that you might receive the proper recognition for your efforts from the community. On the other hand, every single one of your enemies knows who you are and are going to hit you where it hurts the most: your loved ones.

Wally West learned that harsh lesson when Hunter Zolomon aka Zoom went after his wife Linda, who was pregnant at the time. Convinced that The Flash wasn’t willing to do everything in his power to help others since he’d never experienced true tragedy, Zolomon attacked Wally’s family in an attempt to make him a better hero. Unfamiliar with Zoom’s ability to slow down time, The Flash struggled in vain to get to the villain before he could hurt his wife.

Badly hurt, Linda miscarried and even though Wally eventually managed to subdue Zoom, he then realized that he’d actually lost the battle as much as Zolomon had. Distraught, he sought the help of Hal Jordan, The Spectre at the time, to erase everyone’s knowledge that The Flash was Wally West.
