9. Onslaught Was Charles Xavier And Magneto (Sort Of)
In the mid nineties the X-Men were fighting a bad guy so powerful they needed the combined abilities of the entire Marvel Universe to end the chaos. Onslaught was a being of immense psychic power, coupled with super strength, mind control, magnetism, and reality warping capabilities. If a couple of those sound familiar, it's not because Onslaught was buying superpowers at a mutant flea market. At the conclusion of the Fatal Attractions storyline Professor X mind-wiped lifelong frenemy Magneto, turning him into a magnetic vegetable. Since nothing is ever easy in comics, Xavier then became infected with the yucky dark feels in Magnetos soul, and mixed with his own baggage they created a sentient psionic energy. The energy bided its time and grew in strength until it could get up to some mischievous shenanigans. Eventually Onslaught became strong enough that he didn't need to inhabit Xavier anymore, trading in his Professor X suit for some Super Shredder Magneto gear. It took the self-sacrifice of the Avengers to bring him down, leaving the X-Men and a handful of other superheroes in charge of protecting Earth's. Onslaught was clearly a big deal from the start, but finding out he came from the X-Mens supposed moral center? That was more than a little shocking.
