While most people are aware of what made Steve Rogers into Captain America - the serum, the super-soldier program, and the unfortunate part where he's trapped in ice for a couple of decades - what is not common knowledge is exactly why it was decided Captain America would exist in the first place.

As it's crucial to note that, the German government created the Red Skull first - with the villain being intended to strike fear into the hearts of those who went against the Nazi regime. As such, the American government realised that the best way to counter this threat would be to create their own living symbol of American values, an idea which would eventually lead to them making the now superpowered Rogers into Captain America.

Although it's not a huge detail, the idea that the figure of Captain America was explicitly made to counter Red Skull is an interesting one, as it makes their rivalry far more important than you'd otherwise think.
