6. It Isn't That Big Of A Deal...

Which is all well and good, and Marvel are obviously hyping it as a super big deal for many reasons €“ not only is it the culmination of five years of plot strands Hickman has been playing with, it'll usher in a new status quo and presumably also act as a jumping-on point for new readers €“ but honestly? The whole retcon isn't that big of a deal. After all, they have done this sort of thing plenty of times before. Even ignoring all those examples of actual retcons, they also abandoned most of their early history when the Marvel Age truly began in earnest in the sixties under Stan Lee and Jack Kirby (Captain America was brought back and the €œoriginal€ Human Torch buried). There's precedents. Plus honestly, Marvel aren't stupid. They have above-average intelligence for a huge multimedia conglomerate, which isn't saying much, but it does mean they're not going to mess with the winning formula too much. It's not going to change new hit series like Ms Marvel, the relaunched Hawkeye's not going to go through a sudden twist two months in, and Spider-Man? Well...
