10 Times Marvel Was Forced To Change Spider-Man

8. Eddie Brock Was Supposed To Die

After Eddie Brock bonded with the extra-terrestrial symbiote, he transformed into Spider-Man's new nemesis, Venom. Not only did he have the same powers as Spidey, Venom could disable his foe's spider-sense, which was regarded as the wallcrawler's greatest advantage.

On top of that, Venom knew Peter Parker's secret identity, meaning he could toy with him psychologically as well as physically. Because of this, Venom was considered Spider-Man's most daunting foe and it wasn't long before he was also the most popular.

However, things could've turned out very differently for the alien menace. The writer, David Michelinie, intended to kill off Brock at the end of the original Venom storyline, forcing the symbiote to bond with a new host to survive.

Upon seeing how astoundingly popular Venom became, Marvel's head honchos thought it would be more sensible to turn Venom into an antihero. So, not only could Eddie appear regularly in the comics, he could have his own spin-off series, and even team up with Spider-Man from time to time. The writers were also told to make sure Venom stopped killing and eating people since some readers had an issue with a superhero who was also a cannibal.
