10 Times Marvel Was Forced To Change Spider-Man
7. The New Mysterio
Using his own holographic technology, Quentin Beck transformed himself into the illusionary supervillain, Mysterio. But since he used experimental chemicals for his illusions, Beck was exposed to radioactive materials, causing him to develop a brain tumour and cancer. Deciding to go out with a bang, the fish-bowled supervillain orchestrated a massive scheme against Daredevil, which culminated with the death of Matt Murdock's lover, Karen Page. Mysterio revealed he was the mastermind behind all of Daredevil's misery before blowing his own brains out.
Fans were baffled, not just because Marvel killed off one of Spider-Man's most iconic villains, but the fact that Mysterio died in a Daredevil comic.
However, the publisher only allowed Mysterio to be used in this story arc, under the impression he would return. But since Beck was missing a very large part of his head, this posed a bit of a problem.
Since Marvel had planned to use the master illusionist for future stories, a brand new Mysterio was created two years later called Francis Klum. Even though Klum was considered a surprisingly interesting and sympathetic baddie, he only exists because of a miscommunication between the Marvel team.
