5 Reasons Why You Should Rewatch Batman Beyond
3. A New Rogues Gallery
The price of setting your series forty years in the future is that you can't present the old villains as a realistic threat (with a couple of exceptions, of course!). Enter a new rogues gallery; one so complete and lush that it gives the original gallery a run for its money. Terry's rogues set themselves apart from Bruce's in their out-of-the-box modus operandi. While Scarecrow operates on the basis of fear, Beyond's Spellbinder highlights that dreams (simulated through VR) are just as dangerous in their addictive nature, particularly when one's reality is far from great.
Likewise, the aforementioned Shriek's ability to remove sound introduces imaginative perils, such as not being able to hear an oncoming train, and even using silence to hold the city to ransom. The shape-shifting, femme fatale Inque (pronounced "ink", for those wondering) is also nicely featured as one of the few antagonists to pose a genuine threat to Batman; Terry is never able to defeat her by himself.
Even the recurring Jokerz gang is a colourful addition to the crime-filled Neo-Gotham, with their presence illustrating that it is not just the heroes that are allowed to have legacy and influence after they have passed. The Joker's legacy of anarchy underscores the new rogues and sets out to prove that time does not heal all wounds.
