7 Reasons Why Batman: Hush Is Completely Overrated

2. Worst. Motivation. Ever.

Batman Hush2 Here is the entire reason behind everything that happens in this book: Tommy is an evil rich kid €“ no reason why, I guess some kids just turn psychotically evil for no reason? €“ who arranges for his parents to die in a horrific car crash. Except his mother survives and Thomas Wayne, Bruce's dad, saves her life. Tommy is bitterly disappointed because he wanted the family riches but hides behind the mask of being a good kid, patiently waiting for his mother to die of cancer many years later before inheriting everything. Meanwhile he becomes a surgeon and discovers that he has a knack for it, becoming the greatest surgeon in the United States! That in itself should make him a millionaire but apparently it wasn't enough and he still wanted the Elliott family fortune. Just because money. So why does he hate Bruce Wayne so much? Because Bruce's dad saved Tommy's mother's life making him have to wait years before becoming even richer. That's the whole motivation behind the incredibly elaborate schemes, the whole reason behind him becoming Hush, and the whole point of his vendetta against Bruce. Does any of that make sense to anyone?! It's so convoluted and bizarre. What, that was the only chance evil Tommy had of staging his parents' death? He couldn't have arranged for his mother to have another "accident" afterwards? And why become a surgeon? And if he becomes the best surgeon in the wealthiest country in the world, shouldn't the need for more wealth be negated? And he's punishing Bruce for his dad's thwarting of his plan from decades ago?! What a long way to go! And his goal for all of this nonsense? To unmask Batman at Arkham. But Tommy knows Batman is Bruce, as does Riddler €“ why not just tell everyone? And really, unmasking Batman? That's what this was all about?! Every aspect of Hush's motivations are monumentally dumb.
