9 Avengers Fates Worse Than Deaths

4. Having To Choose Between Your Marriage Or Your Aunt

Age Of Ultron
Marvel Comics

Just hearing the words One More Day is enough to send a shiver down the spine of many a comic book fan.

Of course, this most infamous of tales came in the aftermath of the first Civil War. There, Iron Man had convinced Spider-Man to unmask on live TV and reveal himself as Peter Parker. While the fallout of Civil War left Tony Stark contemplating whether it had all been worth it - especially after the 'death' of Captain America - poor Peter had far worse consequences to deal with.

With the entire world knowing that Peter Parker and Spider-Man are one and the same, that immediately put a target on the back of Peter and his loved ones. As such, the Kingpin arranged for a hired gun to assassinate Parker. Unfortunately, this hit went wrong and it's May Parker who ends up hit by the bullet that was intended for her nephew.

As May is left in a critical condition as a result of this wound, Peter is confronted by the devilish presence of Mephisto. Sensing a moment to screw with ol' Web-head, the rogue says that he can save Aunt May if Peter is willing to erase his marriage to Mary-Jane out of existence. Even worse amongst all of this, Mephisto at one point takes on the visage of the young Peter and MJ were destined to have in the future.

After discussing this matter, Peter and Mary-Jane agreed to save Aunt May... meaning that history was altered and these two lovebirds never became an item.
