Batman has the best rogues gallery in comics. However, when you have such a pantheon of degenerates, psychopaths and crimes bosses to choose from, stagnation and repetition can soon set in.

Whenever a new writer takes over on one of the Batman books, it's only a matter of time before they want to tell their Riddler story or show us their take on Ra's al Ghul.

Knightquest offered DC an opportunity to introduce a whole slew of new criminals to Gotham City, ones who the writers would tailor for a new kind of Batman.

During this time, Benedict Asp, the Trigger Twins and Mekros, to name a few, would appear. While most of the new additions were not what you would call first round picks, it allowed the writers to do more than rehash the same old stories.

While an encounter with Malevolent Maniaxe might not be the stuff of legend, it is still refreshing to see creators create and not just drag the same old toys out of the box.
