9 Cool Batman: Knightquest Moments Everyone Forgets About

8. The Man Behind The Bat

While Azrael's "Crusade" took place in Gotham City, the now broken Bruce Wayne would undertake a mission of his own and search for Jack Drake and Shondra Kinsolving.

From an editorial standpoint, the entire Knightquest: The Search arc was an excuse to remove Wayne from Gotham City without killing him off. It would also allow writers to deal with his broken back without infringing on the sense of gritty realism they were trying to portray in the other Batman titles.

The Search storyline is a ground-up reconstruction of Bruce Wayne, looking at all the elements that made him such a formidable character. Here was a hero who had become defined by his allies, his gadgets and his peerless physical prowess, reduced to a lone man in a wheelchair, travelling the globe attempting to solve a kidnapping with nothing but his intellect and faithful butler.

While it may have pretty quickly strayed from its original premise (Including a crossover with the Justice League Task Force), it is one of those rare occasions where readers are given time with the man behind the mask and a look at what makes Bruce Wayne so unique.
