12. The Essoldo Cinema

In a blink and you'd miss it moment as Charles watches Shane with Laura he tells her he remembers seeing the film in his home town.

The cinema won't mean anything to Americans - who could reasonably have imagined it to be made up for the film - but it's actually a personal reference to Sir Patrick's Stewart's upbringing.

The Essoldo was a cinema based in Newcastle in England (as well as being a chain across the North of England in the 1950s and 60s). Having grown up in Jarrow and West Yorkshire in the 50s there's a very real chance he actually did see Shane in an Essoldo cinema.
