As well as taking Logan's basic narrative shape from George Steven's Oscar-winning Western Shane, a couple of clips of the film are shown when Logan, Laura and Charles get to the casino in Las Vegas.

First we see Jack Palance's hired villain cutting down an innocent farmer and then the tragic finale in which Shane delivers a devastating speech about violence defining him before dying.

The whole subplot involving the Munsons and Canewood corn syrup company may seem like a frivolous attempt to bemoan the evils of energy drinks but it's actually there in honour of Shane. In the film farmers are antagonised by landowners trying to force them off, which also happens to the Munsons before they and their hick assailants are killed by X-24.

The film's infamously tragic final speech from Shane is also used heartbreakingly as Logan's eulogy. It's horribly fitting:

"A man has to be what he is, Joey. Can't break the mould. I tried it and it didn't work for me... Joey, there's no living with... with a killing. There's no going back from one. Right or wrong, it's a brand. A brand sticks. There's no going back. Now you run on home to your mother, and tell her... tell her everything's all right. And there aren't any more guns in the valley."
