2. All-Star Superman

All-Star Superman was a twelve issue comic that ran from 2005-2008 and was written by Grant Morrison of Seven Soldiers fame. As far as plot the comic focuses largely on the death of Superman after he is gifted with a unique new power that is also slowly killing him by destroying his cells. Choosing to keep his impending end a secret Superman continues on as normal but at the least expected moment drops dead in the offices of the Daily Planet in his Clark Kent disguise. It is revealed later that he in fact allowed his DNA to be extracted so that if he were to die as believed a clone of Superman could be created keeping the illusion that Kent and Superman were two separate people and ensuring the Earth would not succumb to the evils that threatened it. This beautiful looking comic is a completely fresh take on the Superman mythology and takes the character in an exciting and well received new direction. In fact that's probably what Morrison is best at as a writer. Taking something old and turning it into something fresh and new. For example we are given a new take on the big identity reveal when Lois finds out who Clark Kent really is. In the original 1990s comics this was handled terribly but here with the guiding hand of Morrison it is a truly brilliant moment. Hell, Morrison even makes Krypto seem like a well rounded character instead of some bizarre flying dog.
