Comic books continuing a cancelled TV or movie series are a fantastic way to tell a story in full. As nice as it is to have Serenity back and expanded beyond the movie, it still needs to have an ending. The film Serenity was a fitting conclusion for the TV show, but now that this universe has continued, a new and satisfying ending needs to happen.

The best kind of stories are the ones that give an ending and make you wish for more. Serenity originally left you feeling positive about the world; the truth about the Alliance was out there, new relationships were being formed, and the characters seemed to be at peace. This ending can't be duplicated a second time, but we still need something that sends the characters off again. Now that we've seen the start of a new resistance, the ending should tie into that story somehow.

Of course in an ideal world, Firefly would have continued on for numerous seasons and given all of the content fans could ever want. But that's not what happened. Instead it stood as something finite that was lucky enough to get a film to see its story through. Firefly and Serenity continue to grow with legions of fans every year and the ones that are reading the comics are elated to have it back in their lives. But every good story needs to end, and Serenity no longer has one. It may not end with this mini-series, but Whedon and Dark Horse need to make sure that the story of Serenity ends properly instead of just fading away.
