6. Cassandra Cain - Batgirl/Black Bat/Orphan

Azrael Batman
DC Comics

Cassandra Cain was introduced in 1999 as the daughter of legendary DC assassins David Cain and Lady Shiva, part of a project by the League of Assassins to breed a perfect killer.

After realizing what her future held, she ran away to Gotham at the age of eight. She caught Barbara Gordon's attention when she deliberately put herself in harm's way to save Commissioner Gordon and, with Batman's approval, Barbara began training Cass as Batgirl. After Batman's 'death', Cassandra became disillusioned and gave the Batgirl name to Stephanie Brown.

During the One Year Later revamp, Cassandra became head of the League of Assassins, a twist that garnered considerable fan backlash. It was eventually retconned that she did so only under the influence of Deathstroke.

Cass then took the identity Black Bat, operating first in Hong Kong, then Gotham. When the New 52 era began, she became Orphan, and is still in that role as part of Batwoman's team of young vigilantes.
