10 2015 Movies That Are Destined To Disappoint You
2. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2
The third Hunger Games had a lot going for it. The world of Panem was greatly expanded, an Aliens-esque militaristic visual style was adopted and Jennifer Lawrence was as watchable as ever. And yet all that hard work was for nothing thanks to the asinine decision to split the final book of the trilogy in two. Instead of a thrilling closing act to Katniss' revolutionary story, all Mockingjay - Part 1 gave was two-and-a-bit hours of padding before a painfully predictable twist and the promise of some actual action next time. One of the biggest defences raised in favour of the film was that at least it got the set-up out of the way ahead of the big finale, but that's incredibly defeatist talk. Why should you have to sit through one let-down to get to something that might match the stellar first two? Especally when the odds of Mockingjay - Part 2 actually righting the ship are incredibly low - if they can't get the launch right, how are they expected to stick the landing? This first-half-slow, second-half-fast approach is exactly what happened with Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows, and it didn't work there either. The recent trend of contorting single narratives into duologies and trilogies is one of modern Hollywood's worst obsessions, and Mockingjay stands as one of the worst examples because, had it been a single film, there's every change it could have been brilliant. As it is, get set for more sickly disappointment come November.
