10 2016 Movies That Are Destined To Disappoint You
2. Ghostbusters
The Buzz: As Hollywood has finally wisened up and realised that movies with all-female casts do actually make money (surprise, surprise), writer-director Paul Feig hopes to score his fourth successful collaboration with Melissa McCarthy, who co-stars in this franchise reboot with Kristen Wiig and Saturday Night Live regulars Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones. In addition to all this, Ghostbusters alums Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver, Annie Potts and Bill Murray will cameo, while Ozzy Osbourne also has a small role, and the rest of the cast is rounded out by Chris Hemsworth, Charles Dance, Andy Garcia, Michael K. Williams, Elizabeth Perkins and Warwick freaking Davis (as the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man!). With an epic $154 million budget behind it, Columbia are clearly banking on stratospheric success. Why It's Going To Disappoint: For one, of Feig's four recent movies, this is the first that isn't an original idea, and so there's no guarantee that his style of filmmaking will necessary translate well onto a pre-existing property. This could very well be where the bottom falls out of the gravy train as a result, though it depends on how heavily the film tries to lean on the iconography of the series and how dedicated it is to establishing charming new characters. Don't be surprised if it's criticised for being a pale retread of the original, the zenith of cynical studio filmmaking, where they want to continually repackage classic movies for a new generation with a slight twist. We'd love to be wrong, but it's hard not to be skeptical, and the budget seems almost frighteningly high for a film of this kind.
