10 2016 Movies That Are Destined To Disappoint You
4. Alice Through the Looking Glass
The Buzz: Coming a whole six years after the original billion dollar-grossing film, Through the Looking Glass switches out director Tim Burton for The Muppets' James Bobin, which might hopefully mean the movie doesn't lean quite so heavily on milking Johnny Depp's shtick but actually needs to have some charm behind it. Most of the first film's cast are back, and without the incessant hype of other summer blockbusters, perhaps it can be a rare blockbuster which easily surpasses the rather underwhelming original. Why It's Going To Disappoint: Though the rather low-flying hype and marketing on this movie should make its inevitable under-performance all the less shocking, there's clearly a lot of people who love the original movie, and who may well be expecting a spirited reprise of the same CGI-infused mayhem. Though the film could surely deliver the basic goods, it's hard to expect much more from it than style-over-substance fantasy storytelling: a visually pleasing experience that exits your brain as soon as you leave the cinema. In short, if you're expecting an improvement over Burton's mixed bag original, it's probably not happening. Plus, Bobin will likely be working from Burton's template, so don't expect him to leave much of a creative stamp here.
