10 "Final" Entries In Movie Franchises (That Totally Weren't)

8. Highlander: Endgame

Friday The 13th The Final Chapter
Miramax

Highlander, an action film about an immortal swordsman battling others of his kind, was a surprise success, leading to one of the most unconventional science-fiction action franchises in mainstream film history. It also led to a spinoff television series about a different immortal swordsman (because original actor Christopher Lambert was too expensive for television at the time).

The movie franchise lasted for a full trilogy, and the TV series lasted for six years. Then, in 2000, two years after the TV series and a full six years after the last movie, an ambitious crossover film brought the two worlds together for a final battle that would settle the legend raised by the original film: "in the end, there can be only one..."

This was supposed to be it! It was called Endgame, for God's sake!

One of the two Highlanders died! Story over, right? No way, not when Syfy (then called The Sci-FI Channel) has anything to do with it! They made another Highlander film with the intent of launching a new series. It created a new mythology, but never caught on with audiences, and so the Highlander series ended on a desperate note instead of the swan song intended with the last film.
