10 "New" Movies That Just Ended Up Ripping Things Off

Though many went into this past summer's hit shark movie expecting a Jaws ripoff, or maybe even a quick cash-in on Blake Lively's acclaimed hit from last year, The Shallows, 47 Meters Down in fact owes much more to Alfonso Cuaron's terrific space survival film Gravity.

Like Gravity, the narrative sees two people trapped in an extremely isolated pocket of the world where they absolutely shouldn't be (trading space for the ocean floor), complete with a ticking clock scenario.

Like Cuaron's movie, the film stays with the two leads for its entirety, and there's even a similar oxygen-deprived hallucination sequence. Director Johannes Roberts has essentially admitted the influence in interviews, because when asked about why the movie doesn't cut back to above-the-surface, he said, “Imagine if in Gravity, you kept cutting to ground control. It would have killed the movie.”

Calling the movie "Gravity with sharks" might seem pretty glib at first, but Roberts truly did appropriate the Oscar-winning movie's template for his $5 million underwater thriller.

Which of these blatant ripoff movies infuriated you the most? Shout it out in the comments!
