8. Stir Crazy

Sidney Poiter was the first African-American actor to break through the racial tensions in America to become a huge movie star, and in 1980 he became the first African-American film director to break the $100 million barrier at the box office with the comedy Stir Crazy.

Starring Gene Wilder and Richard Prior - arguably the most loved comedy duo of the decade - Stir Crazy tells the story of two friends Skip and Harry who find themselves in prison after being mistaken for a pair of bank robbers.

The situational comedy is played for broad laughs which hit the mark more often than not (Skip's unfailing optimism in the face of hardened criminals is frequently laugh out loud hilarious), with some hilarious jokes which are decidedly un-PC by today's rather prudish standards.

Wilder and Prior teamed up again at the end of the 1980s with See No Evil, Hear No Evil with considerably less success. But if you're in the mood for another Richard Prior fix on Netflix you can catch his excellent stand up performance from 1979, Richard Prior: Live In Concert.
