10 '90s Slasher Horror Movies You May Not Have Seen

1. Mute Witness

Popcorn 1991
Sony Pictures Classics

Mute Witness follows a make-up artist called Billy who believes she's working on a slasher. When she gets locked in the studio after-hours, she notices the actors are filming a pornographic scene, which isn't in the script. When the performers murder the actress, Billy realises the truth - she's working on a secret snuff film!

Acknowledging the danger she's in, Billy needs to escape from the studio, find the police, and alert them of the crime she's witnessed.

There's just one problem. Billy can't speak.

Although Mute Witness might sound like a gimmicky slasher, it's elevated by the compelling cast. Without uttering a word, you can always tell how Billy feels, thanks to Marina Zudina subtle but precise facial expressions and body language.

Even though Mute Witness is gory and atmospheric, it's also surprisingly funny. The actors have such impeccable timing, the film sometimes comes across as a black comedy. In a way, this makes Mute Witness more horrifying because it makes the viewer relax, catching them off-guard when things take a dark turn.

Also, Mute Witness stars Obi-Wan Kenobi himself, Alec Guiness. What other reason do you need to check this slasher out?
