In Popcorn, college student, Maggie, and her classmates decide to attend a horror movie marathon at an abandoned theatre. During the all-night horrorthon, Maggie discovers there's a deformed killer in the building, who she believes is Lanyard Gates - a deranged filmmaker who murdered his family.

Based on that premise, you may be expecting a corny version of The Phantom of the Opera. Luckily, Popcorn never feels like a generic slasher. Rather than jumping straight into the bloodshed, the film takes its time setting everything up. It builds up the villain, details his tragic backstory, and establishes his connection with our heroine.

Also, the visuals throughout are top-notch. Maggie's kaleidoscopic dream sequences are hypnotically trippy. The practical effects for the killer's face are innovative, comical, and horrifying.

Without spoiling the killer's identity, the actor portraying him is incredible at making him come across as sympathetic, even when he's hamming it up like a pantomime villain. While he's busy chewing every scene, you can't help feeling sorry for him.

Popcorn may not be scary, but its witty script and clever misdirection is sure to keep viewers entertained.
