10 '90s Slasher Horror Movies You May Not Have Seen

4. Candyman

Every movie fan knows about Candyman. We are all aware what happens if one is foolish enough to utter his name five times in front of a mirror.

And yet, few people have actually seen any entry in the franchise. (I mean, you're not missing much with the sequels.) It's likely you've seen bits and pieces of the original, but have never watched Candyman from start-to-finish.

Not only does this underrated classic have great performances, fascinating lore, and brutal kills, Tony Todd's towering performance helped popularise sympathetic slasher villains. Because his character, Daniel Robitaille, died an agonising and unjustly death, you can understand why he has returned as a vengeful spirit. Rather than having a generic motivation like revenge, Candyman kills to avoid his demise being forgotten in the annals of time.

Although Robitaille is a well-written character, Todd's talents elevate him insurmountably. Even though Todd has 200 credits under his belt, his performance as the hook-wielding phantom is his finest work. With his smouldering voice and hypnotic stare, it's hard not to be swayed by his words, even when he's asking his prey to "Be my victim".
