9. Is Zurg Buzz Lightyear's Father Or Not? - Lightyear

In the long list of sequels and spin-offs that were neither wanted nor asked for, Pixar's Lightyear has to be near the very top. Tim Allen's Buzz Lightyear had appeared in four Toy Story outings, his character had been comprehensively explored and developed, and there was no need to bring to life the in-universe movie that the toy was based on.

The film left plenty of questions unanswered by the end, including why exactly did this Buzz have a different voice to the toy, as here the titular character was voiced by Chris Evans, and what was the story with Zurg (James Brolin)?

In Toy Story 2, it was well established that in Buzz Lightyear's lore, the evil Zurg was actually his father, in what was clearly a play on the infamous Darth Vader/Luke Skywalker twist. Since the toy was based on the movie, surely Lightyear would reflect this, after all, it wouldn't make sense if it didn't would it?

Well, when the reveal came in 2022, it turned out that Zurg wasn't Buzz's father, but instead a different version of Buzz himself from the future. So why on Earth did the toy think the villain was his father?
