Project Hail Mary is a new sci-fi adventure film from Chris Lord and Phil Miller (The Lego Movie, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse), adapted from Andy Weir's acclaimed novel of the same name.

Ryan Gosling stars as Dr. Ryland Grace - the sole survivor of a crew sent into the deep reaches of space to try and save humanity from an imminent calamity.

And while one might race to roll their eyes at the impossibly charming, incredibly handsome Gosling playing a dorky, in-over-his-head scientist, it's worth remembering that the man has proven himself immensely skilled at playing clumsy and insecure, as evidenced by his work in both The Nice Guys and Barbie.

Moreover, the trailer absolutely sells Gosling in the role, enough that even fans of Weir's source material seem mostly convinced that they've gotten Ryland's casting right.

Much as mega-budget sci-fi starring perfectly preened A-list actors often threatens its own credibility, Gosling is clearly versatile enough to make it work.
