10 Abandoned Movie Sets You Can Visit In Real Life
1. Hobbiton, New Zealand - The Lord Of The Rings & The Hobbit Trilogies
Within the picturesque valleys of Alexander Farm in the Waikato district of New Zealand, you'll find the gorgeous site of what once functioned as the iconic hobbit village in Peter Jackson's two Tolkien trilogies. This collection of tiny homes set into the rolling hills and verdant valley is a must-see for any Tolkien fan.
Hobbiton as it appears in Peter Jackson's Tolkien trilogies is such a stark contrast to many of the areas, appearing so bright and comforting so as to cement the Hobbit race as a group of distinctively non-adventuring folk. So it's not really surprising that the former film set was turned into a massively popular attraction.
Following the completion of the Hobbit trilogy, Jackson left behind 44 permanent "Hobbit Holes" at the site. Visitors have been able to partake in guided tours of the village since 2002, and the final piece of the set was actually constructed in 2012. Visitors have been finishing their movie set experiences in a replicated Green Dragon Inn, partaking in a local brew or two if they fancy it.
With feasts, tours and the potential for private hire on offer, it's no wonder the Hobbiton set is quite so popular a destination in New Zealand.
