10 Abandoned Movie Sets You Can Visit In Real Life
2. Movie Set Below Mount Vestrahorn, Höfn, Iceland - Vikingr
At the foot of Mount Vestrahorn, in southeastern Iceland, you will find a ghost town of a very different breed to many others on this list. Here, you'll find what appears to be an authentic viking village, a squat collection of weather-beaten wooden buildings that don't seem to have been occupied for some time, except by the odd flock of sheep. And, realistically, they hadn't been, until recently.
This is because the film these buildings were initially built for in 2010 never actually saw the light of day. There's no telling what drama would have initially unfolded within the encircled walls.
However, the site did see some light when Universal acquired its rights, and the movie set finally found its way onto the silver screen in the 2018 film Viking. Based on the early Icelandic sagas, the film tells the story of early settlers on Iceland.
Visitors to the harsh, sublime landscape of Iceland wanting to see the site in all its glory need only pay a farmer (whose land the village stands on) a small fee. So, if you fancy getting more in touch with your viking side, the site still stands open to you. And to the sheep.
