Fancy visiting one of the most expensive and largest public works projects every constructed in America? One that played host to truly infamous criminals like Al Capone and bank robber Willie Sutton, and became the model for many other prisons? Next time you're in Philadelphia, pay a visit to Eastern State Penitentiary.
If you're a fan of Terry Gilliam's 1998 sci-fi feature 12 Monkeys, you might loosely recognise E. S. P. as the mental asylum that Cole (played by Bruce Willis) after he's sent back a little further in time than initially planned and starts rambling about the saving the future.
However, Eastern State has featured in numerous other pieces of media. If you've ever watched a paranormal investigation show like Ghost Hunters or you watched Steve Buscemi's 2000 film Animal Factory, you've also borne witness to at least some of this giant prison complex.
E. S. P. has not been operational since 1971, and has instead existed as a museum and place to remember some of the victims of heinous crimes across American history. It also stages a wide range of tourist events and exhibitions, so is definitely one to add to your list of things to do!
