10 Absolutely Terrible B-Movies That Have Become Cult Classics
2. Birdemic
Take Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds. Remove the masterful direction of Hitchcock and the fantastic leading turn of Tippi Hedren. Replace them with some of the most inane directing and wooden acting the world has ever seen. Oh, and replace the practical special effects, which were actually rather good for a film made in 1963, with hideous CGI bird sprites spinning around randomly and repeating the same few frames of basic animation over and over again.
That's Birdemic, or to give it its full title, Birdemic: Shock and Terror. Directed by Vietnamese filmmaker James Nguyen, who cites Apocalypse Now as one of his major influences and repeatedly claimed that his film was a form of political commentary regarding climate change, Birdemic tells a 'romantic horror' story of two young lovers caught up in a crazy catastrophe in which birds decide to go on a murderous rampage against mankind. The birds spit acid and explode when they die too, just for good measure.
Anyone who can find a lot to love in bad movies is guaranteed to adore Birdemic. The acting is abysmal and the effects are even worse but, thanks primarily to Nguyen's "never say die" attitude, Birdemic has amassed a legion of cult fans. Comedy teams like Mystery Science Theater 3000 and Tim and Eric have taken a look at the film and a sequel was released in 2013.
