10 Acclaimed Movies Everybody Now Hates

8. Green Book

The first Best Picture winner of the list, Green Book was clearly an Academy favourite. Garnering more than just a singular win, the awards conversation was dominated by Mahershala Ali and its screenplay award hopes, keeping it firmly in the conversation all season. The film has a strong 78% on Rotten Tomatoes and has a rare A+ CinemaScore.

However, it wasn't long until the overwhelmingly positive reception turned sour, making the reviewers and Academy members serious outliers when it came to the political discussion around the film.

The film soon became the target of another white saviour argument, with the real family of Don Shirley - portrayed by Ali - denouncing the film for its portrayal of the relationship between Ali and Viggo Mortensen's characters, claiming that in real life, they were not friends at all.

Ali apologised to the family, stating he was not aware there were people he could have reached out to for a more accurate portrayal.

The story focuses on Mortensen's character overcoming his racist tendencies through his job, which many see as a white saviour role which director Peter Farrelly claimed he actively tried to avoid.

Many have called Green Book one of the worst Best Picture winners in recent memory. And while not everyone views the film this way, this is perhaps one of the shortest turnarounds in public perception.

Chances are I’m watching a movie or replaying Mass Effect rather than doing anything productive.
