Acclaimed for its groundbreaking use of visual effects and storytelling possibilities, most people nowadays will claim they never liked the movie in the first place.
Sometimes, particularly flashy films' actual quality get drowned out by spectacle, leading to a perception that was perhaps never true. The film was - and still is - a total cultural phenomenon.
It became only the second film to gross $2 billion worldwide, completely smashing Titanic's box office record with nearly $2.8 billion in box office receipts. It also dominated the visual effects side of the 2010 Academy Awards, winning for Art Direction, Cinematography and Visual Effects.
Much like The Phantom Menace, with the passing of time and the advancement in technological capabilities, the discourse surrounding Avatar is now seen to have been acclaimed for its showy visual effects and not much more.
With impressive modern spectacles available a dime a dozen, it takes more than spectacle to beat out the passing of time criticisms that Avatar has experienced. The conversation instead shifts to its less than original story and even political discussions of the white saviour trope.
It'll be interesting to see how those multiple sequels perform more than a decade later to say the least.
