10 Acting Careers Destroyed By Great Movies

8. Laurence Fishburne - The Matrix

The Film: Where did it all go wrong for the Matrix trilogy? What started out as the groundbreaking sci-fi thriller of a generation, turned into a slightly confusing awesome action film sequel. Then Revolutions happened. Stuck smack bang right in the middle of it was Laurence Fishburne, as the wise mentor of Neo, Morpheus. The Matrix was a career renaissance for Fishburne, having done little to speak of since his fantastic, yet controversial, portrayal of Shakespeare's Othello in 1995. The riddle speaking, pill giving Morpheus would return Laurence to the mainstream once again with a stellar performance under the Wachowski brothers. What Happened Next: Fishburne was already a 20 year veteran of the screen and stage when the first Matrix film was released in 1999. However, Fishburne's luck would run out where it started. Having smashed the ball out of the park with the original Matrix film, the Wachowski brothers butchered the sequels, as well as Fishburne's career in the process. The critical deformation of the third installment in particular caused massive backlash onto his career and instantly halted his future endeavours in the process. What Now: With a short stint at CSI on the small screen, as well as a role in the Fantastic Four: Silver Surfer in the title characters voice role, it seems as though Laurence Fishburne may have raved his way down the wrong cave in Zion as he tries to recuperate his career.
