10 Action Movie Flops That Deserve A Second Chance
3. White House Down
White House Down gave yours truly the most fun he’s ever had with a Roland Emmerich movie, but when the picture made only $73 million in the US (after costing $150 million to make), it sent its director scurrying off to make an Independence Day sequel.
Hissable villain James Woods has taken over 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue for….oh, some reason. Look, you don’t watch this kind of film for its intricate plotting, nuanced characters and Shakespearean dialogue but to see stuff blow up, which it often does.
A car smashes through the wall of the Oval Office, a villain who (intentionally?) looks like the bad guy in Commando turns out to be a hair-trigger psycho (what’re the odds?) and just like President Harrison Ford in Air Force One, Foxx isn’t afraid to afraid to take on his enemies with both fists. Oh, and there’s a car chase on the White House with helicopter gunships and rocket launchers and whatnot. That’s fun, too.
If you still need convincing about the film’s merits, try sitting through a double bill of Olympus Has Fallen and London Has Fallen instead.
