9. Cliffhanger (1993)

This Sylvester Stallone Die Hard wannabe has been called 'Die Hard on a mountain' but I like to think of it as 'Die Hard on a cliff" since a lot of the action deals with falling off said cliffs. Sly plays guilt ridden Gabe Walker who drops best pal Hal Tucker's (Michael Rooker) girlfriend Sarah to her death while on a climb. Gabe comes back after an eight month hiatus to collect the last of his personal things and split. While he's packing and reminiscing with old gal pal Jesse (Janine Turner) he hears a distress call from two climbers who've gotten into trouble on the mountain. He goes to help Hal lead the two "climbers" and after a little altercation between the two they are taken prisoner by evil ex-military intelligence officer Eric Qaulen (John Lithgow). Eric it seems, stole 100 million dollars that was split into three suitcases. He's on the mountain top with his little band of not-so merry men to reclaim the bags. Using a very similar formula of Walker against the baddies, Sly goes on to do battle with these thieves and manages to rebuild old bridges that he thought he'd burnt. And while Stallone never once says, "Don't push me!" His Rambo type image withstands his mentally scarred character in this film.
