Yet perhaps no actor on this list has made quite such an important or impressive contribution to society as a whole than Hedy Lamarr, who is best known for her iconic roles throughout the Golden Age of Hollywood, namely Algiers, Boom Town, White Cargo, and Samson and Delilah.

Though lauded for her acting talent and striking beauty, Lamarr was more than a skilled actress - she was also an inventor. More to the point, at the start of World War II, she co-invented a radio guidance system for Allied torpedoes that couldn't be jammed by the Axis.

Though the tech was never used in the war, it did lay the foundations for modern WiFi, GPS and Bluetooth, as is of course used by billions of people around the world today.

And so, the late Lamarr's legacy goes so far above and beyond her well-regarded screen roles - she was also a tech pioneer who's arguably never really received her fair due.
