With Depp's casting being seen as something of an unnecessary risk from the get-go, largely due to the star being accused of physically and emotionally abusing his then-wife Amber Heard around the time of his Fantastic Beasts debut, the eventual Depp v News Group Newspapers Ltd libel case and all of the negative publicity that came along with it inevitably gave Warner Bros. no choice but to recast the role of Gellert Grindelwald from The Secrets of Grindelwald onwards.

After only shooting one scene on the flick, Depp was still paid his full salary for his appearance due to his contract stating that he would be compensated regardless of whether the movie was finished or not. $16 million later, not to mention their replacement's salary, Warner Bros. brought in Mads Mikkelson to step into Grindelwald's shoes for the incoming third Fantastic Beasts outing.
