In the original trilogy of Matrix movies, Agent Smith was as recognizable a foe as sci-fi cinema has ever had. Hugo Weaving’s sneering, over-the-top performance gave suitably nasty human form to the faceless evil machines behind the trilogy’s convoluted backstory and a suitably hammy counterpart to Keanu Reeves’ infamously dull Neo.

Despite this and his long-running relationship with the Wachowski sisters, creators of the franchise, Weaving won’t be returning for any further Matrix instalments. The upcoming Matrix 4 won’t include Weaving due to an unfortunate scheduling conflict which he was unable to overcome with the directors.

This means the techno-thriller franchise will need to find a new face for its antagonists in this forthcoming reboot, and good luck to them—Weaving’s Agent Smith is about the most hated personification of evil tech since the much-maligned buffering circle.
