7. George Carlin - Bill & Ted

Almost as iconic a presence in the Bill and Ted franchise as the titular pair of slackers, Rufus was a guardian angel to the duo throughout the first two films. A disciple of their radical teachings, he hooked up the pair whenever the plot required it and saw them through more scrapes than most movie mentors could manage, doing it all with an unflappable cool in contrast to actor George Carlin’s usual manic onstage persona.

Unfortunately, Carlin isn’t around to see the pair back in action, as the shockingly youthful looking duo reunite for an upcoming sequel. The actor and iconic comedian died over a decade ago, passing in 2008 after bowing out onscreen in a handful of animated efforts and Kevin Smith’s sentimental Ben Affleck vehicle Jersey Girl.

Luckily Reeves and Winter are able to come together for the long-awaited sequel, and an interview with screenwriter Ed Solomon revealed that the original script included a sequence where the now-middle-aged pair encounter their younger selves and Rufus. The third instalment is thus set to pay tribute to Carlin via footage from the original film, but only time will tell whether this segment will make it to the big screen.
