Melissa McCarthy has probably had the most consistent career trajectory of anyone on this list, it's just a surprise the Academy bothered to take notice at all, least of all for her performance in Paul Feig's Bridesmaids, where she's best remembered for being the loud, obnoxious one, and taking a crap in a sink. Though McCarthy was a riot in the role, I don't think anyone looked at the movie's first trailer and then saw an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress in her future: it just defies explanation (other than it being a relatively weak year for that category, which it was). It's doubtful McCarthy will strike this sort of gold again, yet for the remainder of her comedy career she'll be able to carry that nomination around with her, while audiences everywhere will be in a continual state of disbelief that was even considered for the gong. It smacks of the Academy trying to be hip and current, but it horribly backfired. Are there any unbelievable Oscar nominees I missed? Let me know in the comments!
