Seven-time Academy Award nominee and two-time winner Robert De Niro cemented his reputation as one of the greatest actors in history a long time ago. After all, this is the Method man that gave incredible performances in Mean Streets, The Godfather Part II, Taxi Driver, The Deer Hunter, The King Of Comedy, Once Upon A Time In America and Goodfellas to name but a few. However, since the turn of the 21st Century De Niro seems to accept every offer that comes his way, resulting in a large number of terrible movies that have tarnished his legendary reputation. The tone for his output was set by 2000's cringe-worthy and self-parodying turn in The Adventures Of Rocky And Bullwinkle, and since then the actor has only given a handful of strong performances from dozens of screen appearances. In fact, since 2010 De Niro has appeared in eighteen movies, but only his supporting role in Silver Linings Playbook sees the actor anywhere near his best. Fans have been waiting for a genuine career renaissance for quite some time now, but based on his recent output a true return to form seems increasingly unlikely. While there have been a number of box office success, there have been just as many if not more critical failures. Re-teaming with Al Pacino resulted in the generic Righteous Kill, while there have been awful horror movies (Hide And Seek, Godsend), unfunny comedies (The Family, The Big Wedding), and supporting roles in B-movies (Machete, Killer Elite, Killing Season). With almost 100 feature films to his name, Robert De Niro really needs to start choosing quality over quantity when it comes to his movie roles.
I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
