10 Actors Who Turned Down Roles In Star Wars

4. Lindsay Anderson - The Prince Of Evil

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IX33mYO4K1w Lindsay Anderson was more recognized for his work as a director than an actor but rumor has it that Lucas had him in mind for an unspecified role in his final instalment of the original trilogy. In a letter to his acting compatriot Henry Dibling, Anderson claimed that he was offered a role in the film as a (in his own words) 'Prince of Evil' type role. Given his age at the time of filming and the introduction of certain characters, its speculated that the role that Anderson describes is that of either Darth Vader (when he takes his mask off) or more likely that of The Emperor (even though you'd think that'd be more 'king' than 'prince' - who knows?). Irregardless, Anderson turned it down as at that point, he had already started work on one of his directing projects - 'Britannia Hospital'. The role of the Emperor was eventually given to Ian McDiarmid who went on to re-don the hooded cloak in the prequel trilogy.
