Days of Our Lives is one of the most long-running and influential daytime soap operas in the entire history of television, running non-stop on NBC since its debut in 1965. The show primarily focuses on the Horton and Brady families located in the heart of Salem, and has naturally seen plenty of characters come, go and be killed off over the years.

One of the show's most notorious characters remains Stefano DiMera, a wealthy European immigrant with bags of money and plenty of dodgy links to organised crime. With so many dodgy connections made over the course of his time in the show, Stefano racked up his fair share of enemies along the way.

He was burned alive in a car wreck, died in a plane crash and suffered a brain tumour during his time with the show, however, it was the death he suffered from the hands of his own son in 2012 that would prove to be the most unsettling for actor Joseph Mascolo.

When speaking about the latest demise of Stefano, Joseph stated: "It was very difficult. Neither EJ, nor Stefano, would have wanted it done that way." Rumours from the set of the show leaked out that Mascolo had some pretty frank disagreements with the way in which his character was being fazed out, with some cases reporting that he was tired of the constant death fake-outs the show was putting Stefano through.
