Terrence Howards exit from the MCU was the most acrimonious and unpleasant moment Kevin Feige and co. have experienced in their casting adventures, with the vocal actor not afraid to offer up his version of events. According to Howard, Marvel reneged on an escalating payment deal to play James Rhodes in Iron Man 2, instead trying to renegotiate so that he was only paid one eighth of the stipulated amount in the belief that the sequel would be just as successful with or without him. We will probably never know whether or not Howards story is accurate, although given that Marvel initially offered Mickey Rourke a paltry $250,000 to play Ivan Vanko in Iron Man 2, it does sound feasible. However, with the greatest respect to Howard, its true enough that Don Cheadle proved more than adequate as his replacement and Iron Man 2 didnt suffer from his absence in terms of box office receipts. If Cheadle becomes the second Rhodey to go to war with the Marvel machine, Chadwick Boseman ought to be a contender for Mark III. Boseman rose from relative obscurity to earn rave reviews as Jackie Robinson in 42 and James Brown in this years Get on Up, and his star is very much in the ascendancy. Get him while hes almost red hot.
