Horror film fans have had a rocky time these past few years, to say the least. While there have been some true standouts, such as Paranormal Activity or Don’t Breathe, a lot of the scary movies on offer are quite simply sub-par.

So it’s a genuine cause for celebration when a movie like The Invisible Man comes along with a genuinely inventive script and a gripping central performance from an actress as accomplished as Elisabeth Moss. Her role was specifically singled out for praise and rightly so, since she easily gives the best performance of her career as the abused partner of an insane scientist, the titular Invisible Man.

The movie serves as a masterful exploration of how gaslighting in abusive relationships can turn someone’s nerves to shreds and Moss makes sure to never portray her character as a helpless victim. She is strong while also being vulnerable, and gets the audience on her side early on as she battles to free herself from the sinister Adrian Griffin.

With a few exceptions, the Academy don’t often bother to award horror performances with nominations. But come on. If any actor deserved a nod, it’s Moss.
