Peter Jackson's 2009 adaptation of Alice Sebold's acclaimed novel The Lovely Bones was widely expected to be a major awards contender, at least until people actually saw it for themselves.

Critics largely dismissed Jackson's supernatural drama as a syrupy misfire that failed to compellingly translate the soul of Sebold's source material to the big screen, but there's one performance that most everyone agreed stole the movie.

Stanley Tucci was near-universally acclaimed for his turn as child murderer George Harvey, even earning a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination for his work.

Tucci's performance is strong enough to even overcome his character's almost comically obvious makeup and clothing, delivering a movie monster who left the audience's skin crawling.

Tucci is about as reliable as character actors get, and it's a shame that his finest moment as a performer didn't end up in a better movie.
