What makes this particular "out-of-nowhere" way of scaring the crap out of a pair of actors for realsies so ingenious is the fact that both Elizabeth Reaser and Kate Siegel were very much in the know when it came to what was heading their way during that shocking jump scare in Netflix's Haunting of Hill House.

Yet, determined to get the most authentically frightened response possible out of the two when it came time to shoot the infamous car scene, director Mike Flanagan opted for a sneaky-yet-simple tactic on the day. Instead of having Victoria Pedretti's ghostly Nell pop up when the two were expecting her to arrive later on in the scene, Flanagan instructed the actor to scream early and interrupt the characters' argument out of the blue.

And so, despite still having half a page of dialogue to get through in the scene, Pedretti launched herself forward and subsequently terrified the actors, folks behind the camera, and just about every poor soul who sat down to watch the series when it arrived on the streaming platform back in 2018.
