David O. Russell's Amsterdam should have been a smash.
Anchored by the trio of Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, and John David Washington and with a supporting cast that will make your eyes water, Amsterdam follows the story of a 1930s plot to overthrow the government of the United States.
Great cast, prominent director, compelling story. What went wrong?
Well, we don't know. What we do know is that the film was savaged by critics and bombed to the tune of nearly $100 million.
Another prominent actor caught up in the Amsterdam maelstrom was Michael Shannon, who fans of Boardwalk Empire will remember as Nelson Van Alden.
Shannon has some considerable acting chops, appearing in 8 Mile, Knives Out, and The Shape of Water. He also appeared in 2022's Abandoned, which was nothing like any of the films just mentioned.
A horror movie about a haunted house, Abandoned has Shannon playing a supporting role opposite John Gallagher Jr. and Emma Roberts. Whilst frightening in places, critics wrote that the movie was pretty cliched and found the ending dissatisfying.
